1891 census...Aged 5, he was at Carter Street, Fordham, with his father James RUTTERFORD [27] a painter born Mildenhall; his mother Ellen [26] born in Bury St.Edmunds; sister Ellen R. [8] born in Great Chesterford, Essex, brother Ernest [6] born in Great Chesterford and brother Arthur [3] born in Barton Mills. 1901 census...Aged 15, a house painter, he was still at Carter Street, Fordham, with his parents, brother Ernest, also a house painter, sister Rose (Ellen) and new brothers James [8] and William [4], both born in Fordham. 1911 census...Aged 25, a house painter, he was a boarder with Mary Ann Ford at 3 Old Market, Beccles. His parents, brother James and William and sister Gertrude [8] born in Fordham, were now living at Pleasant House, Beck Road, Isleham. |

Enlisted in Newmarket. Most of the summer of 1917 the 7th Suffolks were in the Monchy area, a bit of training, a lot of raiding, but no full scale attacks. Since Herbert died of his wounds and his service records are not found, it cannot be stated exactly where or when he was wounded. Only 4 of the battalion died in the previous 7 days, 2 buried in Duissan to NW of Arras and 2 in Monchy-le-Preus, SE of Arras |
